Seriality, serial production or repeatability provides the basisof design. Its ‘opposite’ (oppositum) – unrepeatability or singularity – is the essence of autonomous art. Quantity also determines thevalue of applied art objects, while it is also important how many people can have access to a given work. This category is best manifestin the area of industrial design since the number of works can range on a spectrum from as many as a million manufactured products tounique or limited series. In this context, quantity also defines quality: it matters to whom, in how many copies and for what purpose agiven work is made.
